A very wrong invitation for the new year 2010

Dear $email,
I just wanted to take a quick second of your time by
wishing everyone a HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Here's to a brand new and prosperous 2010 with
a collection filled with genuine pieces.
-------------------
NOTE: Special offer below in this email
-------------------
A few years ago, I visited a wealthy customer in the
Netherlands who bought from me a 5 cm Fang figure
from the Josef Herman collection for €5,000.
He was living in Amsterdam, so I decided to personally
bring it to him, to view his collection and to get
to know him better.
After all Amsterdam is only two hours from Antwerp
where I live.
He was living a bit outside Amsterdam in a big loft.
When I entered his home, I saw nearly 20 Fang statues
and the same amount of Kota's. When I looked more closely,
I discovered they where not of the quality I like.
I asked him how he had acquired these and how much
he had paid.
He explained that he was a retired real estate manager
from a large bank in the Netherlands and had been a busy
man all his life.
On Friday afternoons, he would always go to the same dealer
in the center of Amsterdam and spend a significant amount
in this African Art gallery.
He usually paid between €15,000 and €20,000 for each piece.
I told him this, that buying from a single source only
is not good.
You have to spread the risk and I advised him to get
rid of his collection by returning as many pieces as
possible to the seller.
I also gave him a list of trusted dealers in the
Netherlands and told him to go twice a year to the Fairs
in Brussels and Paris to buy.
Last year, I visited him again when I sold him a nice
little Mahongwe.
Indeed his collection was cleaned up and looked much
better with some nice new pieces including a large and
genuine Songye, fine Lega ivories etc,…
but in the process he had lost a lot of money.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Yesterday, a friend of mine forwarded to me an invitation
from the VVE "Vereniging Vrienden Etnografica"
(Association of Ethnographic Collectors)
website: http://www.vvetnografica.nl
contact: http://www.vvetnografica.nl/VVE/content/view/23/46/
The Dutch association of Ethnographical Collectors invites
collectors to go to the VVE-Café on Sunday 17 januari 2 p.m at
Italiaander Galleries, Prinsengracht 526, 1017 KJ Amsterdam.
As a base to discuss the re-transcript of the quite famous
'The Authenticity of African Sculptures by Henri Kamer"
you can read it online at :
http://www.kunstpedia.com/articles/113/1/The-Authenticity-of-African-Sculptures/Page1.html
But this seems to me THE moment for real collectors to make
a point and it should massively return the membership cards
to cancel the VVE membership.
Of course the question will be
"How many of them will DARE to return the card"
Why ?
Henk Italiaander is one of the most successful dealers with highest
business sales in the Netherlands and has been that
for decades! Since 1969 to be precise.
Well that he just will give a lecture about
"Authenticity of African Sculptures" is poignant when you
know he sold more than hundred "Fang" statues and the fact
that one of these has ever been accepted in an
international auction house should make the point
sufficiently clear.
He was also never accepted as a participant in
professional vetted fairs.
A careful estimate is that over the years he sold goods
for €5-20 million which is a great achievement!
Happy New Year !

Dank je wel, David,
Interessante materie.
Alfred Jacobsen
