Dear $email,
Already in 1937 the town of Antwerp asked Frans Olbrechts, the noted African
art scholar, to organise a massive exhibition of Congolese art. The Tentoonstelling
van Kongo-Kunst showed 1525 objects made in the Belgian Congo alongside an
array of contemporary art "inspired through the Congo" in addition to
a significant quantity of historic documents proclaiming to Antwerp's rank as
"the first African colonial market" (Petridis 2001: 173).
This
40, 5 cm XVIIth Songye
rubbed with palm oil is one of the 600 objects sold to the city Antwerp in 1920
by Henry Pareyn and one of the many treasures to be seen in the MAS. (more
ethnographical
objects in the MAS)
The show grew to become not just a monument to Olbrechts but additionally a
landmark for museum history. While Olbrecht's need to present the objects as art
and never as ethnographical material, he adopted the approach of other major
museums displays of African art throughout the nineteen thirties.
Olbrechts implemented this new system both in the show as well as in his
brief essay for that exhibition catalogue, which presents many ideas later
elaborated in the influential Plastiek van Kongo (1946).

The Antwerp exhibition acquired mainly objects in the large assortment of
Congolese art in the Antwerp's Vleeschhuis-Museum, 1600 Congolese objects that
the City had acquired from Henri Pareyn in 1920. However, the display also lent
a lot of objects from private collectors, an essential vary from the approach of
previous museum displays.
As Olbrechts notes, this permitted him to "bring to light many
completely unknown objects" (Olbrechts 1946: 10) (2)
.
Antwerp’s port connects the city with the entire world and ships came in
with all the colonies treasures was the most important contact Belgian point for
those collecting African Art. ... (to be continued during the lecture in
Antwerp...)
You are invited to participate with me in a very special journey in Antwerp
Starting the day with a lecture given in my Antwerp gallery on
the Sint
Katelijnevest 27 about "African Art in Antwerp history" at
10:30 a.m (doors opening at 10 a.m), as described above.
It
will be followed by a lunch from a young, ambitious Top Belgian Chief . Dave de
Belder from Restaurant De Godevaart
will let us taste cutting-edge gastronomy that is well worth discovering. The
restaurant is set in an old house (two houses further than my gallery), which
has retained part of its original decor (stuccowork and fireplace) and a garden.
A New York visitor wrote on TripAdvisor:
“Spectacular - rivals the best that Europe can offer!” ( Date of
review: Apr 7, 2011 )
We had two different three course lunches with paired wines. My daughter
ordered a la carte. It is hard to descirbe the brilliance and complexity of
each dish - all a combination of various temperatures, flavors and textures.
My eel starter was sushi quality. Visually, all the dishes were stunning. This
was probably one of the best meals I have ever eaten. Location is excellent
for anyone in Antwerp for the day.
MAS

A few days ago (May 13, 2011) the MAS Museum ((Museum at the Schelde
river) opened and received 38,000 visitors in the first weekend. It is an
impressive building and is best described as a collection of collections .
Antwerp’s port connects the city with the entire world. Thousands of
fascinating objects have washed ashore in the metropolis from all continents and
are now presented in the MAS
The MAS permanent collection is made up of 470,000 objects, compiled from the
collections of the Ethnographical Museum (33,000 objects), the National Maritime
Museum, the Museum for Regional Folklore, part of the Vleeshuis's collection and
the Paul and Dora Janssen-Arts pre-Columbian art collection. The MAS itself has
a storehouse which houses around 180,000 collection pieces.
In the Visible Storage of the MAS, the different collections of famous
collectors come to life once more like with African Art from one of the first
African Art dealer Henri Pareyn (1869-1928).In the permanent collection many
world quality pieces are shown.
After we finished the guided tour those who want can take a look at the
Pre-Columbian art of Dora Janssens, the spouse of famous late Dr. Paul Janssens
from Janssens pharmaceutica, before ending our journey together.
If you are willing to join on this special journey you should know that
