Wonders of Africa Giovan Ivana Bargna...

Genoa, Palazzo Ducale Africa delle meraviglie
31 December 2010 - June 5, 2011

Edited by Ivan Bargna and Giovanna Parodi da Passano with the collaboration of Marc Augé, the exhibition presents an important selection of traditional African works of art of great aesthetic and cultural value.

The exhibition, which is a collaboration between anthropologists and artist Stefano Arienti, brings together the two sections of the Palazzo Ducale and Castello D'Albertis with over 350 works from Italian private collections, mostly unpublished. Masks, fetishes and other beautiful sculptures are scattered along the circles, drawing a fascinating journey into Wonderland, able to lead straight to the heart of sub-Saharan African cultures, their customs and ways of life, from Mali to Congo, from Liberia to Cameroon.

The curators' intention is not to raise once again the references between modernism and primitivism (the artist who plays West African), but to put into play in setting the show for certain contemporary artistic practices help evoke contexts are different, but perhaps far less than what we think, to bring the experiences from the Italian collections of these works are Africans.

Built on more scenarios that cross - that of the strong presence of objects, the multiple and changing their lives, the ghosts and desires that give rise to our masks and fetishes - the interiors of its emphasis on materiality and tactile qualities of African art objects, creating a setting that combines immediacy and evocative, and where possible giving up windows or teaching devices that encase the works.

Red, white and black, the color triad that characterizes traditional African art, are the colors used in setting the outset. The white walls of the exhibition are juxtaposed with works by Stefano Arienti: carpets dyed red or black, which are always separate from the works in Africa, helping to evoke the domestic space of the collections from which the objects come. While books handled, feathers, shadows ... introduce strange presences and unsettling interference, making connections that weave a complex series of relationships between the works, their doubles, our obsessions, and thus helping to create the references to specific classes of objects.

We thank "Salvatore Sciarrino" for granting us the use of fragments of his song entitled "The wood and the word" for marimbone, by Simone Mancuso, taken from the CD: Sciarrino, Cage, Scelsi, "A Word from the Wood", Simone Mancuso, percussion, Stradivarius, 2010, STR 33863
