African Faces book wins famous FEDRIGONI Award
by David Norden, december 3, 2009 - read it online at http://african-arts.info/african_faces.htm I am glad to hear that the book African faces has won the 'FEDRIGONI TOP APPLICATION AWARD" - publishing hard cover 2009". Some 700 publications were submitted for this contest and an independent international jury of professional publishers and designers conferred this prestigious International Award to African Faces - the first time ever to an Art book dedicated to tribal arts.
An alternative View of the African Mask
Marnix Neerman describes the relationship between modern art and so-called "primitive art" and the 500 splendid photographs of masks, amongst which many are double-page spread and 68 cm-26.7 inches wide close-ups give a good example for those who want to learn about recognizing authentic masks, and how to distinguish them from fakes. An old mask will always look different from a counterfeit.
The photos of Hugo Maertens and text in this book show the African mask from a different perspective, and the authors discuss the influences this so-called "primitive art" has had on modern art. What is also interesting, is the fact that a lot of the masks in the book are from the stores of Belgian museums and universities that have never before been shown in any books. It includes an exciting selection from the treasures hidden in storage at the RMCA Tervueren, the Ethnographic Museum in Antwerp, the ethnographical university collections in Ghent, Louvain and Louvain-la-Neuve. Further masks have been provided by famous international collectors such as Jim Ross, the Wall family, Willy Mestach, Marc Felix, etc... Created and published in Belgium- a country known for it's colonial past - this Award once again puts Belgium on the frontline of African art knowledge while promoting it in a positive light.
