Interview with Alain Naoum April 28, 2009, part
one.
David Norden:
First let me ask what interested you initially in African Art, and how did you
start dealing in the area.- Can you tell us what tribes and type of objects you
sold best in the past? Do you see some actual trends?
Alain
Naoum: Since I was a child I have been always interested by the
history of mankind, like most children I imagine. Questions about where we came
from, what was early man and life like, etc. always held my interest. I
also really enjoyed reading the comics of “Tintin” - “Les Septs Boules de
Crystal,” “Les Cigares du Pharaon,” etc.
>From an early age, I was a regular visitor of the “Musée du
Cinquantenaire,” and I was fascinated by Egyptology. In 1987, while
still in school, I had the opportunity to see the exhibition “Utotombo” at
“Le Palais des Beaux-arts” in Brussels. It was a revelation! I can
still picture a “Ngangela” mask from the Vanderstraeten’s collection, in
my mind. I had the same impression with African Art as I had with
Egyptian art! The mask seemed alive. At that outing something was born
inside me, and I wanted to learn more. I returned to the show with
Jacques van Overstraeten, who was a friend of my grandfather. Jacques was very
enthusiastic about African art and knowledgeable connoisseur. I think I
caught the “virus” from him.
My grandfather was a “brocanteur” in Brussels.
In his antique shop, “Place du Jeu de Balle,” he dealt in everything from
antique furniture and paintings to an occasional work of African art. He
knew Willy Mestach, who was a regular visitor of the “vieux met,” and also
Bruno Conti to whom he sold a very good Baluba staff, which was in the Conti’s
collection later on. He knew all “old school” collectors, and he did
business with them many of them.
I lost my father when I was 18 years old, but prior to his passing he told me:
“better than wasting your time at school, you should work!” And he was
right! Unfortunately, I was not as diligent student at school as I should have
been. So he started to consign a few African art pieces to me for sale.
Yes consign! To educate me to the value of work and money, and it was a good
school. His death was perhaps the shock of my life, which taught me some of life’s
harsh realities.
I think my christening, my bar mistva in the business was during my first ...
