Statuaire Babembe Sculpture

Sculpture Babembe Dear $email,

Richly illustrated , this bilingual ( French-English) monograph is the first devoted to the work of the Babembe people, who live in Congo Brazzaville.

These fine anthropomorphic statues, carved from wood, are characterized by incisions representing tattoos, scarifications, or skin decorations that the Babembe use during initiation ceremonies or to heal.

Most of the wooden objects illustrated in this book where never published before. Many of these astonishing works of art are adorned with textiles, and attributes like eyes made from Faience or Shell fragments, and the carvings are  done with much sensitivity.

Representing ancestral spirits, and/or animal creatures, these often miniature statues are believed to have super-natural forces empowered by the Babembe's animistic religion to protect the sculpture’s commissioner.

In this book you can read a study on scholarly level of the aesthetic quality, the styles, and meaning of the fascinating powerfull and precious little sculptures.

The works represent ancestral spirits to heal and protect. Here, scholars analyze the aesthetic quality, style, and meaning of each fascinating sculpture.

The first full investigation into the symbolic artworks of the Babembe, this richly illustrated monograph presents a particular type of sculpture that the Babembe devoted to their family ancestors. Many of these anthropomorphic wooden statues are published here for the first time, and they bear the same tattoos and scarifications, or skin decorations, that these people have always used to embellish their bodies during initiation ceremonies.

Alain Lecomte, a parisian dealer Galery owner and Art Critique, he will present the book in Brussels during the Bruneaf 2010 . His site is www.alain-lecomte.net

Raoul Lehuard, studied at "La Sorbonne", and founded the Arts d'Afrique Noire (that isn't published anymore). Raoul Lehuard is an expert in African Arts of the Congo & published many books.

Daniel Klein, is a private collector of African and Precolumbian art, and created a new Pre-Columbian archeology Art Museum in Quito (the Casa Del Alabado ) .
