Editorial note: As usual members of the organisations and not members of the organisation will show objects in and around the Sablon in Brussels. David Norden decided not to show objects in Brussels this year since he is not an official member of the Bruneaf. You can meet him in Antwerp to see his African Art Collection (preferably by appointment).

Please be aware that the Bruneaf organisation can not be held responsible for the objects on display -ALSO NOT WITH MEMBERS OF THE BRUNEAF ORGANISATION, SINCE THE SHOWED OBJECTS ARE NOT VETTED- As mentionned in the catalog objects quality and authenticity are of the SOLE responsability of the owners . BEFORE buying it is STRONGLY recommended to ask exhibitors to deliver a written certificate of authenticity that at least should feature a photograph of the object, the culture of origine, the presumed age, and previous ownerships or publications, date and signature of the seller, and a short description of the object and tribe use. You should always request a certificate from the dealer you are buying from, and only buy from dealers in good standing or recommended by other dealers.

More events in Brussels related to Africa :

This summer will see an explosion colour and vitality as the DR Congo and 16 other African countries celebrate 50 years of independence. The Centre for Fine Arts is organizing a festival as only it can, bringing to Brussels the greatest names in the performing and the visual arts: Rokia Traoré, Angélique Kidjo, Didier Awadi, legendary choreographer Germaine Acogny, and many more artists who fuse excellence of form with social engagement.

As if that were not enough, this ambitious project proposes a new vision for our cultural relations with Africa. That is why BOZAR and the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren have joined hands to forge a new and long-term collaborative project at the Centre for Fine Arts. The fascinating GEO-graphics exhibition will be the initial laboratory for this project, and all the artists invited to festival will be asked to join in discussions and share their thoughts on this Visionary Africa during their ‘48 Hours in Brussels’.

Tomorrow’s Africa? Find it today at the Centre for Fine Arts!

How should the ethnographic gems of African art be presented in our time? The Bozar Centre for Fine Arts and the Royal Museum for Central Africa have joined forces to offer a bold answer to that question during its summer festival, Visionary Africa. Held at the CFA, GEO-graphics, the festival’s main exhibition, sets out to recontextualise more than 220 objects of breathtaking beauty from the Museum and from other Belgian public and private collections by bringing them face to face with the work of contemporary African artists.

These are being chosen by eight arts centres carefully selected from all over Africa because of the active role they are playing in the development of the cultural sector in the continent.

The art centres’ interventions are inscribed in a scenography which sheds new light on how to read the relationship between old and new by highlighting the affinities and ruptures between past and present. The project’s artistic director, the internationally renowned architect David Adjaye, will also present his own photographs of African cities.

The exhibition will demonstrate the influence that the original context of creation exerts on cultural output. The interplay of these four approaches - the museum pieces, the new works, the platform offered to the arts centres, and the artistic director’s vision - will present the visitor with a new history and with an unprecedented lexicon for mapping African art and culture, the common denominators and the driving force behind this original and modern cooperation and development platform.

Curators : David Adjaye, Anne-Marie Bouttiaux (RMCA), Koyo Kouoh, Nicola Setari.
