The Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) presents Art and Power in the Central African Savanna, an original exhibition that explores the political and religious power of 60 sculptures created by artists in four Central African cultures: the Luba, Songye, Chokwe, and Luluwa. Carved primarily from wood, these power figures act as containers for magical organic ingredients and serve purposes both religious and political. Art and Power will then travel to the CMA (March 1 through June 7, 2009) read more

The Cleveland Museum of Art permanent collection includes more than 35000 objects.

Chokwe people
Wood, beads
The Harold R. Clark Educational Extension Fund,
Education Collection 1915.453

The gallery is organized geographically with a division in four broad cultural regions: Western Sudan, Guinea Coast, Nigeria and the Congo Basin. Objects from the same culture are shown together and contrasted with those of their neighbors.

This arrangement illustrates the formal and stylistic relationships between neighboring artistic traditions and emphasizes the uniqueness of the arts of distinct peoples.

The cultural regions are marked in the gallery by four free-standing cases containing a single work of art that may be viewed from all sides.

Serpent Headdress, late 1800s–early 1900s
Guinea, Baga people

The Cleveland Museum of Art is one of America’s leading comprehensive museums with a collection that spans 6,000 years of creative achievement in the arts and is world-renowned for its quality and breadth.

Currently undergoing a multi-year expansion project that will re-imagine the museum, it is a significant international forum for exhibitions, scholarship and art education.

The Cleveland Museum of Art has a membership of nearly 25,000 households and is generously supported by a broad range of individuals, foundations, and businesses in Cleveland and Northeastern Ohio.

The Cleveland Museum of Art is generously funded by Cuyahoga County residents through Cuyahoga Arts and Culture. Additional support from the Ohio Arts Council, which helped fund this program with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence, and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans.
