Among the highlights is
Figure of the Bamana, Mali
Right horn glued on the mother animal, left horn
glued on the child, small damage. Slight, old stress crack on the upper body of
the big antelope. Minor imperfections on the two upper spikes of the young
animal. Otherwise in excellent condition.
Wood, height without socket = 84 cm, height with socket = 89 cm

The masks of the Bamana from Mali called "tjiwara" are counted among
the best-known carved works of African art. The masks were fixed to the dancers
heads with basketworks, which are missing with both of our objects. They
constitute abstract antelopes, which appeared pairwise at festivities like
initiation rites of the peasants from Mali. The so called "tjiwara"-society
is one of the six "dyo" initiation societies of the tribe. An antelope
is said to have teached the people how to plough the fields. Thus the reduced
figure refers to the mythical origin of the people and symbolizes propagation
and fruitfulness.
