Der Schwerpunkt der rund 13 000 Objekte umfassenden Afrika-Sammlung liegt auf traditionellen Skulpturen, Masken und Ritualgegenständen, die in Geheimgesellschaften im Kult und bei der Wahrsagerei vor allem in West- und Zentral-Afrika verwendet wurden - darunter zahlreiche repräsentative Beispiele afrikanischer Kunst. Entsprechend den Interessen der in der Kolonialzeit aus Europa nach Afrika Reisenden machen Waffen einen weiteren Schwerpunkt des Bestandes aus. 1966 erwarb das Museum die rund 550 Objekte zählende Afrika-Sammlung des Düsseldorfer Malers Klaus Clausmeyer.
