UI unveils Iowa Gallery digital art collections
 |
Now you can stroll through the University of Iowa Museum of
Art galleries from your desktop, browse works created by Iowa artists for
the Daily Palette, or search through 40 years of graduate student art
online, thanks to a new resource offered by UI Libraries.
|
This array of digitized artwork is now available through "The Iowa
Gallery: Digitized Art Collections of the University of Iowa" at http://digital.lib.uiowa.edu/gallery.
| The Iowa Gallery currently provides expanded and integrated access to more
than 15,000 images from the museum's permanent collection, the School of Art and
Art History Graduate Archive and the Daily Palette."
As an academic museum, education is our primary mission, and the Iowa
Gallery digital collection will make our entire collection available to a very
wide audience online," Howard Collinson, director of the UI Museum of Art,
said.

"The visual arts are one of humanity's basic means of understanding
the world, and we are pleased to be able to share our collections of art from
many centuries and many cultures with educators and students."
UI has inspired creativity and innovation in the arts for generations. Iowa
was one of the first to accept creative work for graduate theses and to confer
the Master of Fine Arts degree.
Much of the history of art at the university and its surrounding communities
has been documented and digitized by the School of Art and Art History in the UI
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and by the UI Museum of Art.
The Iowa Gallery provides improved integrated access to these digitized
collections and enhanced searchability for all of them.
Developed and maintained by the Digital Library Services department of UI
Libraries, the Iowa Gallery is designed to support research and scholarship by
students, faculty and staff.
"The Iowa Digital Gallery is a remarkable collaborative project that
offers access to significant visual resources from the rich and diverse
university collections," said Dorothy Johnson, director of the School of
Art and Art History. "The Gallery provides a rapid and direct means of
viewing individual works from the School of Art and Art History's extensive and
unique collection of graduate student art, much of which is dispersed and
exhibited throughout the campus. We are delighted that these outstanding works
are now immediately accessible to a very wide audience."
Joni Kinsey, a UI professor of art history described her experience with the
Iowa Gallery: "This fall I have used the Iowa Gallery digital collection
for my class 'The Art Museum: Theory and Practice.' My students were able to
view the Lee Collection of Etching Revival Prints on their own time and from
their own computers. In class, we had wonderful discussions of the works,
because the students were able to spend more time with the pieces. This is a
terrific resource."
"The Libraries' staff is very excited about the opportunity to
collaborate with members of the academic community on this project," said
Nicole Saylor, head of Digital Library Services. "By combining their
subject expertise with our expertise in information organization and technology,
we can work together to create permanent, user-friendly digital collections that
better serve scholars both here on campus and worldwide."
The Iowa Digital Library contains nearly 90,000 digital objects --
photographs, maps, sound recordings and documents -- from libraries and archives
at UI and their partnering institutions.
