July 2008. The Big African Art picture.

( to fill the survey read the newsletter online at  http://www.african-arts.info/july2008_big_picture.htm )

Dear $email,

If you remembered well, in my last email I asked you to fill the survey, already 150 of you did fill it, If you want you can to.

I had some remarks about the privacy, but I assure you it is only for my private use, to give you more the things you need, and be able to give you some feedback, also there is no obligations to fill everything, you can leave empty spaces where you want.

The results are quite interesting, I was astonished to see the amounts some of you are ready to spend to get quality pieces and news, and I will discuss my main conclusions further next month. One of my main conclusions is that you are ready to spend much money for quality pieces and are happy with my newsletters but want to receive them more frequently and are ready to pay for premium content. Let assure you that I always will keep delivering much content for free, since I want to have "educated" consumers.

Speaking about interactivity, I got a request from Yale University, for those of you who have pieces with old labels, to collaborate, take some pictures of your documented pieces coming from old collection that have a label.

I will answer some of your concerns but need more people who wants to fill the survey. It already inspired me for an Ebook I am working on, but new ideas are always welcome. Also if you have old text related on African Art you wrote and want to share let me know, I will be glad to put you in the spotlights.

I am leaving for 10 days in the South of France to the photography festival in Arles with my wife Sylvie (she is an artist photographer) and my 8 years old daughter Zazie. It will certainly give me some new ideas. But I will stay reachable by phone and email.

I have many new high quality pieces, my Shop in Antwerp is filled interesting pieces at this moment but I did not found the time to upload them, so this will be for the next newsletter, but you still can see some of our new pieces at the July 08 quick peep.

AUCTION HOUSES RAISE BUYER'S PREMIUMS YET AGAIN, AS 20% MARK NOW GOES TO $1 MILLION

My friend Alex Novak who is selling fine art photography told me that the auction giants Christie's and Sotheby's have once again quietly raised their commissions to buyers.  It is now 25 percent on the first $50,000 and 20% on the next $1 million.  The 12% rate now only kicks in above that mark.  It had previously been 12% above the $500,000 mark.  Other auction houses have not followed suit yet, and I wouldn't advise them to do so since scientific testing proved that buyers and seller spend more at auctions when the premiums are lower.

It is always interesting to me how both of these two houses always seem to raise their rates identically at the same time, especially in
view of their past history of rate fixing.  It is also odd that I am bombarded by press releases about other news from these houses, but I had to dig up this major news of a rate change by searching through their websites under "buyer's premiums".

Buy-ins (unsold lots) have been increasing steadily at these houses as bidders finally are factoring in these much higher premiums with their bidding. At the last Sotheby's auction in Paris the room was really crowded and the total amount sold at the auction was quite high at six and a half million euros (including the high buyers premium),making the average sold piece at 72,000 € but still only 90 lots sold on the 146 presented.

Consignors must also face up to the fact that these higher percentages will also clearly effect the final bids that they receive on the hammer price of their items as the houses take an ever bigger cut of the pie.  It now usually makes more financial sense to place work directly with dealers, even at 20-30% commission rates.  At the least other houses are now at a 5-12% price point advantage where Christie's and Sotheby's must outperform those houses by at least that much for a consignor to break even.

Speaking about auctions the last ones in Brussels at Pierre Bergé during the Bruneaf sold tribal art items for close to two million euros, but this had as side effect since no other event was organised ( like last the year the fantastic exhibition of Willy Mestach). Not so much people visited the last Bruneaf and customers mainly spended the money at the auction instead of in the galleries. Every ones agree it is a strange thing for a dealers organisation like Bruneaf to promote auctions, certainly when organised at the same moment.

The Yale/GvR archive is doing an extensive research on labels and written names or numbers (or a combination of these) that are connected to African objects.
