Indigenous: From
Alaska to Argentina, 2000 years of Art On Friday, May 15th, 2009, from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m., Nasser & Co. Gallery will host its new exhibition, focusing on art from Indigenous America. The principals, Ron Nasser and Will Channing, have carefully curated a show that will link the collective approach of tribal societies to the rituals of daily life through their reverence for the animal spirit world and their inherent beliefs in cultural identity. The common languages which exist in the works of art are the patterns with which each individual culture decorates their offerings to the Creator, whether an object made for everyday use or as a representative of the spirits which guided them. Here is a unique opportunity to view these original inhabitants of the Americas through 2000 years of their works of art: from the walrus ivory carvings of the Okvik Culture Eskimos, (250 B.C. to 100 A.D.); to the stone fetishes of the Rio Grande Peoples of New Mexico; the sculptural offerings of the Mayan and Olmec Cultures of Mexico; the ceramic vessels of the Nazca Peoples of Peru; to the drums of the Plains Indians of the vast American West. As Native Peoples were subjected to different phases of colonization from migrations across the Bering Straits all the way to Tierra del Fuego, they share a common past and therefore their art sometimes seems to tell a similar story. This exhibition will be a rare moment to see their forms of expression through the available works of art from the American Continent. Among the highlights is a very rare bone staff finial depicting a double headed condor crouching atop a kneeling monkey. It is from the Tairona Indians of northern Colombia, circa 800-1500 A.D. Known for their use of gold, the Taironas treasured bone, which for them was prized more than gold. The exact use of it is unknown. It is an important recent discovery as there is only one known in private hands. There are other examples in the Metropolitan Museum, New York; the Museo del Oro, Bogota, Colombia; and, the University Museum, Philadelphia, Pa. Nasser & Co. opened in September 2008 with two of this country’s preeminent dealers of Tribal Arts. Ron Nasser is a well-known international specialist in African and Oceanic Art, who has also consulted with private collectors on acquiring fine Northwest Coast Indian and important ancient Eskimo art. For thirty years he has been a leader in the field, working with museums and placing masterpieces from Oceania and Africa in public and private collections. Will Channing, who has his expertise in American Indian Art, started his career in 1972 and spent the last twenty years in Santa Fe, New Mexico where he owned a celebrated gallery and auction company. He has also worked as an appraiser and consultant and has experience both in this country and Europe. He was for many years a fixture at the antique shows across the country, where he was one of the first dealers to exhibit the art of native peoples.
