NEWS: tribal art fair New York 2012 preview

November African Art News 2011

Dear $email ,

When I started dealing in African Art in 1992 things where slightly different than today, and my daughter who will be 12 in two weeks, wasn't even born.

There was as many fakes as today, but the main difference was that people didn't pay such high prices for the finest quality as today, and people didn't found provenance so important as it is today. On the other side when you have an object that is real old and finely carved it is easier to sell today.

There where much less auction houses interested in African Art. With the internet, the market became larger but also the offering of pieces carved in ateliers. Also today people like to go to Fairs (like the one in Miami at the end of the month) and often buy at Auctions, but often they miss the fact that by having a good relation with serious African Art dealers they will get a trusted advisor who can also find them quality pieces at reasonable prices. Also with a dealer you can often negotiate to pay an expensive piece in a few months, try to do the same with an auction house.

And I still see many affordable and genuine pieces on the market today, starting at 2,000 € and under 10,000 €.

Do you buy African Art as an investment or because you love it ? Do you find "authenticity" important? I do for sure..

If so you should buy from dealers known for having quality and who can deliver correct description and past provenances.

I found by looking at the objects from Facebook African Art members, that not all collections are "equal" in quality, and even that dealers who are getting objects directly from Africa , often have more decoration objects. You should know that it's better to buy one genuine and fine piece for 5,000 € than to have ten you paid 500€ but that nobody wants. And since more than 80 years people are looking to buy African Art in Africa, it is often easier to find genuine pieces in Western lands. I have a friend who just came back from Ouagadougou, where he visited a few Antique dealers, and found out that prices there are on the same level as here.

If you are in the Antwerp neighborhood to visit the MAS, the Belgian Antwerp Antique dealers and contemporary Art gallery's ( Art A ), come say hello, I have plenty of fine objects at this moment, and would love to meet you.

In this month newsletter I will give you some ideas for gifts and more, ...

Hope you'll enjoy the tips and readings.

And if you are serious at becoming a collector, and didn't so yet, don't miss my insider tips by becoming an African Art Club Member it's only 10$ a month.

See some of my recent acquisitions and objects in the slideshow below, inside you'l find two superb Nok heads, a fine Lobi statue and much more:

TeotihuacanOn page 30-31 you will see a fine Teotihuacan mask that I got from a private collection. In the ancient Mexico, Teotuhucan was the capital, a center of learning and the arts. Reviving the traditions of the earlier Olmec culture, the artists of Teotihuacan created stone masks of enduring beauty and mystery. Their ceremonial function is uncertain; it is not known if they represent mortals or gods. This splendid example depicts the human face with serene simplicity. (price on request)

Last but not least, can you tell me why I would like to help you build a fine collection? (just hit the reply button)

Ok, I gotta run now.  I'll talk to you soon, hope you enjoyed this edition,
