Vous aurez sans doute reconnu cette sculpture sénoufo, reproduite en couverture de la Gazette n° 38. Elle récoltait 260 000 € dans la vente de la collection Durand-Barrère, mais restait sous son estimation. 

Cette statue longiligne est en réalité un pilon de danse utilisé pour les rituels de la société initiatique masculine du Poro, qui prend en charge tous les jeunes garçons dès l’âge de sept ans jusqu’à ce qu’ils atteignent vingt-huit ans. 

Les grands dignitaires du Poro sont les détenteurs de l’autorité politique du village. Les statues deble – abréviation de madeble qui signifie «esprit» – vont par paire, incarnant le couple primordial, constituant l’unité sociale idéale qui respecte le lignage des ancêtres. Les deble assurent notamment dans le bois sacré du poro la protection des initiés.
