Through African Eyes: The European in African Art, 1500 to present

DIA Caryatid Drum Depicting a EuropeanDIA Caryatid Drum Depicting a European

Through African Eyes: The European in African Art, 1500 to present” is set to feature works from Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Sierra Leone and Cameroon.

Artists from different African cultures created pieces that “illustrate how African perceptions of the European over time were neither monolithic nor static and that many African societies alternately incorporated, rejected and transformed elements of European cultures,” according to the news release.

The DIA is located at 5200 Woodward Ave. Admission is $8 for adults, $4 for ages 6-17, $6 for ages 62 or above and free to members. Hours of operation are Wednesdays and Thursdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Fridays 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Through African Eyes explores art created by Africans in response to the varied and dynamic cultural exchanges between Africans and Europeans over 500 years, making it the broadest analytical overview on the subject to date.

The exhibition features 100 of Africa’s finest three-dimensional artworks and utilitarian objects executed in wood, ivory, metals and textiles from the holdings of the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) and other leading American and international museums and private collections. Among the countries represented are Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Sierra Leone and Cameroon.

African artists from diverse cultures have used and continue to use visual forms to reflect their changing attitudes toward Europeans as the latter evolved from stranger to colonizer to the more inclusive Westerner. The objects illustrate how African perceptions of the European over time were neither monolithic nor static and that many African societies alternately incorporated, rejected and transformed elements of European cultures. Dynamic cultural exchanges not only produced new African art forms, but stimulated new social values and modes of governance that re-shaped ways people conceptualized and lived life day to day.

Through African Eyes casts the European as the cultural “other,” and reverses longstanding Eurocentric perspectives that have dominated African art studies. By contextualizing African works that imitate, distort, criticize, or mock the “other,” the exhibition looks at how this art works to affirm, critique or resist European presence in Africa.

A richly illustrated 200-page exhibition catalogue will include essays by recognized experts and expand on the ideas conveyed by the exhibition.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $6 for ages 6-17, $10 for groups of 15+ and free for DIA members.

This exhibition has been organized by the Detroit Institute of Arts. Generous support has been provided by the Friends of African and African American Art, the DTE Energy Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts. Additional support has been provided by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the City of Detroit.
