fifth edition of TAF Amsterdam.
Tribal art in vogue: unique objects
at TAF 2008
By now, everyone knows that tribal art is a great way to add a little character
to your interior. Its popularity is really taking off, and rightly so. An
original mask, for example, goes perfectly with a real Eames chair, Piet Hein
Eek cabinet or a classic Chesterfield sofa. Or, you can follow Peggy
Guggenheim’s example and combine it with modern art. If you need a little
inspiration, come to the Dutch Tribal Art Fair (TAF 2008) in Amsterdam, which
will once again feature unique objects.
Tribal art is commonly confused with souvenirs, which are made for tourists.
However, tribal art or ethnic art refers to sculptures, masks and utensils made
by non-western peoples. One of the big differences with western art is that
tribal art has some proven daily use. The objects range from textiles, furniture
and jewellery to ritual masks and statues.
Generally speaking, tribal art comes from Oceania, Africa and Asia. The various
objects all have their own unique stories. Crafted according to ancient customs
and rituals, these artworks add a special touch to a wide variety of interiors.
Although every tribal artwork is distinctive and unique, some especially
remarkable pieces will be displayed at this year’s TAF, which is being
organised for the sixth time. These will include a mask by the Lega, which was
made specially for initiated men, an extremely abstract and mysterious mask from
Nigeria that was used during a Chamba masquerade and a procession cross from
Ethiopia dating from the 14th or 15th century. Clearly, there is a unique story
behind every object and the gallery owners would be more than happy to tell you
about it!
A total of 17 specialist art dealers from the Netherlands and abroad will
display over 2,000 exclusive objects at TAF 2008. Collectors, enthusiasts and
anyone who is curious about tribal art can come and look around or learn more
about this art form by attending a guided tour (also for ‘beginners’) or an
interesting lecture, all at the stylish ‘De Duif’ church in Amsterdam.
Tribal art is becoming more and more popular and attracting an increasingly
broader interest, resulting in sharply rising prices at the famous auction house
Sotheby's. Some pieces are even being sold at prices as high as a million each.
However, to brighten up the average interior with tribal art, you do not need to
pay nearly as much. For example, shields are popular at the moment.
